Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS)

The Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS) is a permanent visa.  As the name suggests it involves sponsorship or to be precise nomination from a Australian employer in a position located in a designated regional area of Australia.  The RSMS program is often a suggestion we provide to skilled workers who may not qualify for independent skilled migration and cannot locate a suitable offer of employment and sponsorship in the more highly populated capital cities.  Regional employers particularly those located in more remote regions of Australia are often desperately in need of qualified and willing workers in skilled positions.

Unlike Temporary Skilled subclass 457 visa holders who seek to work for 2 years with the one employer in the desire to transition to permanent Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) the RSMS visa is a permanent residence visa from grant.  Following grant the visa holder has the obligation to fulfill the nominated regional employment for a minimum 2 years. Failure to make genuine effort to fill the position or leaving the position within the 2 year period can result in cancellation of the RSMS visa.

For regionally located employers RSMS provides the opportunity to fill skilled positions without the more extensive sponsorship obligations attracted to the Temporary Skilled Work Visa subclass 457 program.

RSMS also has scope to nominate any occupation under Australia and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) occupations skilled level 1-3.  There is no minimum salary level aside from providing the same market rate and conditions of employment which would be otherwise offered to an Australia work and there are no Training Benchmark expenditure requirements for the nominating employer.

It is important to note that although the prospects for approval of a nomination increase with the remoteness of the position location regional areas are defined by postcode and some designated regional areas for RSMS include;

  • Nerang and Carrara on the Gold Coast, Queensland (QLD)
  • All of the Sunshine Coast, QLD
  • Geelong 1 hour drive from Melbourne
  • All of Western Australian including the capital city Perth
  • All of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) including capital city Canberra
  • All of South Australia including capital city Adelaide
  • Northern New South Wales (NSW) bordering the Gold Coast, QLD

    We were so relieved to find someone who not only knew what they were doing but who also were genuinely interested in our plight to get a visa for my partner to be able to stay in Australia.”

  • My son and I were granted our Regional Sponsored Migration Visas last week and would like to take this opportunity to express our sincerest gratitude for all the guidance and hard work that Glenn put in to our not so straight forward case. Throughout the whole process which at many times can seem so perplexing and intimidating Glenn provided us with sound and concise advise and helped to keep the morale up. The amount of red tape and documentation necessary for this process can seem like a logistical nightmare at times but step by step he got us through it and to the finishing line in the end!

    The fact that we were granted our visas will have life-long repercussions for both my son and I and therefore I recommend to anyone out there about to embark on this process to use a reputable and trustworthy immigration agency, such as GW Migration. We have been absolutely elated since hearing the news last week and could not have done it without them.

  • My wife and i chose Glenn Wellburn because we felt he was honest and very professional in his work.Prior to coming to him we met with several migration officers who did not seem clear about our case nor did we feel we could trust our future to them.

    I would recommend Glenn to anyone seeking professional advice on matters of migration to Australia. He is solid in his preparation of documentation and is caring in his approach.

    Thanks again Glenn!

  • After 2 years of trying to organize papers to apply for permanent residency myself, I came to see Glenn to see if he could help. After about 3 weeks, I received notification that my application for a Returned Residents Visa had been approved. They were professional in all that they did and because of their help, mine and my family’s future is now secure and looks a lot more promising.
